Good coaches give good advice. Great coaches ask great questions. Here's a list to get you thinking about questions you could be asking to help your coachees think through their issues and come up with their own way forward.
- What worked well? What are you proudest of?
- What didn’t work so well?
- How do you think that could have gone better?
- What would you like to happen instead?
- How will you do it differently next time?
- What has contributed to your success so far?
- What strengths do you already have and how do you think you could use them to best advantage here?
- What strengths, interests or passions would you like to develop further?
- How easy or difficult would that be for you to do?
- What impact do you think that is likely to have?
- What would you say you learned from this?
- What progress do you see yourself making?
- What would it look like if you were entirely successful? How would you like it to look?
- What first steps could you take toward that goal that would make you feel you were making progress?
- Why do you want that goal? What are all the benefits you can think of?
- What is really important in life/career? Why is that important to you?
- What obstacles have you already faced, and how did you overcome them?
- What obstacles do you expect to face here, and what could you do to prevent or overcome them?
- What resources do you need? Whose support do you need?
- If a friend were in your shoes, what advice would you give them?
