Remove De-motivators!

You put a lot of effort into motivating and engaging your employees, but you still hear a lot of complaining? Have a look at the things in your workplace that may be de-motivating them.

Sometimes these are known as hygiene factors. When you get them right, nobody notices. More hygiene doesn't motivate people more. But get them wrong and everyone notices.

You can improve workplace motivation by eliminating or reducing these:

  • Being forced to do poor work
  • Unfairness
  • Unsafe work environment
  • Toxic work environment
  • Stressful work environment, no help with stress
  • Poor performance not dealt with
  • Bad behavior toward colleagues not dealt with
  • Good performance ignored... or even punished
  • Unnecessary rules
  • Low pay and benefits
  • Lack of expressed appreciation
  • Lack of honest feedback - how am I doing?
  • Unnecessary/busy work
  • Policies/practices that make employees feel they aren't trusted
  • Policies/practices that make employees feel disrespected
  • Perception that leaders lack integrity or ethics
  • Perception that leaders are hypocritical, don't walk the talk
  • Problems with boss/supervisor
  • Problems with co-workers
  • Decisions that affect employees taken without their input
  • Employees' legitimate concerns not listened to
  • Invisible work
  • Lack of tools or training
  • Lack of opportunity to progress
  • Lack of direction
  • Lack of information
  • Lack of empathy for employees' life situations outside work - births, deaths, illnesses
  • Difficult commute/hours
  • Boring job
